All Kinds of Heat

8/13/21 Smoky in Maple Leaf

At the peak of our heatwave, we’re seeing smoke from Canadian wildfires. Out extra early for our walk yesterday, we noticed downtown Seattle, which usually looks bluish on the horizon, looking decidedly yellow-brownish behind the haze. The light everywhere looked eerily yellow. Fortunately, both the heat and the smoke are predicted to start blowing off by tomorrow.

Speaking of heat, we had more than our share in Maple Leaf this week: Just a few blocks from home, a campfire in an encampment caused a brush fire that went all the way down the embankment toward Interstate 5. (If I turn 180 degrees from the fire site, I would be looking at the palms I sketched last summer.) Thankfully, no one was injured, but the closest home had its fence and plants singed. The individual who had been living there for several years had a collection of strange (heavy!) objects that were revealed after the fire. Now that person is homeless again and has the heat to contend with, too.

Artifacts revealed after the fire. Just beyond is Interstate 5.

Singed grass next to the fire site.

  1. Fires are always scary. The year my sister died just a few weeks after her memorial service they had a big CA fire come through their area and my BIL and his boys had to evacuate. The fire came up to the other side of the sidewalk that was by their gas grill. It was that close!
