A man in a waiting room. A free toilet on the sidewalk (“Works
great!” the sign reassures me). A live lobster in a tank at Central Market. The
world is full of small stories for those who look for them with a sketchbook.
...timely (for me). I've been struggling with my sketching since returning to it post-pandemic and in the past few days I've come to understand why.
I simply went back to sketching with the wrong mindset. While I used to say that "I just draw stuff," my recent sketching has been frustrated by a self-imposed demand that I produce something significant. Silly me. This has caused me to better understand the many who 'can't find something to draw,' or 'don't have time.' We all need some small stories in our sketching repertoire.
There are times when I get into the "produce something significant" mindset, and it's usually when I travel or visit a new place. I think the pandemic (and my very small sketching perimeter) reinforced the importance (to me) of being happy with the small stories. Individually, they might not mean much, but collectively, they tell a large story of one's life. I love that kind of daily documentation.
