Trying
to maintain a regular life drawing practice like I used to at Gage, I’ve been
attending model Shawna Holman’s short-pose sessions on Zoom every
Saturday. Although the medium isn’t ideal, I’m getting used to it as the new
reality for now.
I appreciate
that Shawna keeps trying new things to keep it fun and interesting. A couple
weeks ago, it was warm enough that she posed out in her garden, where the
lighting was much better.

Last
week, the session began with a set of 30-second poses! The shortest pose I’d ever
done before that was one minute, so these were a terrific workout. I pulled out
a brush pen to try to capture her dynamic, energetic poses. Afterwards, when I
looked at the whole sequence on the page, it was like looking at animation cels.

Shawna
is also very entertaining. Dressed in a bikini for the whole session, she gave
us a “pandemic” set wearing a mask and gloves as she disinfected her home and
applied hand sanitizer. In another set, she played hockey, still in the bikini.

Sounds like a great sketching session! The 30 second poses are amazing, but my favorites are the last few 3 minute blue poses. Those are really great!
