5/1/20 Maple Leaf neighborhood birthday party |
I
heard a lot of honking and whooping outside, so I went to look out the window.
Our neighbor across the street had turned four, and he was having a drive-by
birthday party. Family and friends came by to wave from their car windows.
Others walked up but stood in the street to chat while the birthday boy rode on
his dad’s shoulders. Some set gifts down on the sidewalk.
Someday,
he will not remember much about this party, but his parents will tell him about
how it happened during the pandemic. Maybe next year when he gets a normal
party, will he wonder why everyone came into the house instead of simply driving
by?
Every time I hear honking now I think of birthday parties. How strange our lives have become.
