| 9/21/26 Sugar maples, Crown Hill neighborhood |
After Mary Jean and I sketched the enormous chestnut tree in Fremont, we went west to the Crown Hill neighborhood, where she knew
that the sugar maples on North 80th Street were near peak. A noisy
arterial, 80th is not a pleasant place to sketch, but it’s worth it
to see these fiery beauties. They’re the same maples that Kim and I had sketched last year, though that was several weeks later and nearly past their peak.
As we shared sketches with each other, we officially declared it: Leaf-peeping season is on!

Gorgeous sketch of the trees Tina! I love your use of colored pencils.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I think Neocolor II crayons did the heavy lifting in this one.
DeleteSo like the way you put the big tree in the foreground so we had to "peep" around it to see the real show in the background.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'm happy with the composition, too!
DeleteI like the softness of the materials you used in this sketch. Well done!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Joan!
DeleteLove this piece Tina! Hope you are going ok x
ReplyDeleteI thought of you recently - I bought an old (probably 90s?), unused Derwent 'Sketching Collection' set with a mix of graphite, charcoal, pastel and coloured pencil materials. It included some older style Drawing pencils with the woodgrain visible through a clear lacquer. They are uncapped and you can see how thick the cores are! I remember your posts about them and how you got sent a new set of Drawings pencils for the use of your photos!
This set also had charcoal pencils with a similar raw wood look (but capped). I don't know why little details like that are so enjoyable to me, but it's just fun.. Pencil nerds unite!
Happy leaf-peeping season Tina! In Australia we don't get that so much here, so I will vicariously enjoy your lovely tree sketches. I love your style, you are very talented. Thank you. Jess
Thank you, Jess! Oh, that old Derwent set sounds interesting! The description of the colored pencils does sound like the vintage ones I have. I don't think I've seen the corresponding charcoal or pastel pencils, though.
