Interior Urban Sketching

10/26/12 Lamy fountain pen, Diamine Chocolate Brown ink, Stillman & Birn
It’s frustrating being an Urban Sketcher when the weather isn’t hospitable for sketching outdoors. I’m trying to find public interior spaces where I can sketch, but so far, I haven’t come up with many (Northgate Mall is one, but it’s an inspirational last resort). Any ideas?

Last winter I spent a lot of time in coffee shops, but most of the sketches that came out of there were of the floating-head-and-torso variety. This year I’m giving myself the challenge of sketching more of the interior space as well as the people occupying them. In today’s sketch, I gave myself the additional challenge of using only one medium: My Lamy fountain pen filled with Diamine Chocolate Brown ink. (It’s one of the samples of brown ink I’ve been trying out, and I must say I love the warm brown wash it makes.)

Note to self: Don’t think you can evade perspective issues by running indoors! Exterior architectural perspective is hard enough, but it may be even more challenging indoors where it’s difficult to get sufficient distance to see the horizon line and vanishing point. As I’ve said before, the long winter ahead will give me plenty of practice.

  1. It is frustrating when you want to sketch and the weather isn't cooperating. Looks like you found some good spots. I agree that indoor architecture is a challenge too...and so are people. You are doing a great job with both.

I would like to suggest that you try sketching at a bowling alley...if you can stand the noise. There is always a lot of activity and it is something different. I've done it a few times.

  2. Bowling alley -- that's an interesting idea, Joan! I'll check it out (I haven't been in a bowling alley since high school...! ;-) ).

  3. Being that I was in a beautiful hotel this weekend, I'd suggest the lobbies of impressive hotels and other public buildings. I was at the Hyatt Bellevue and the "Winter Garden" lobby next to it was an amazing space.

Tried to post this twice from my iPad while at the con but Google wouldn't let me sign in.
