Diary Comics from My Head

11/12/24

My imagination-based diary comics continue, inspired by the prompts and template I learned from Drewscape. I’ve been making these at the end of the day when I’m tired, have the lowest level of creative energy (and apparently the messiest penmanship!), and the hardest time being motivated to sketch. Given all of those potential barriers, I really need a structured format to draw from my head.

The Nov. 13 page (above) does not follow Drewscape’s format; it’s more of a traditional comics story arc with a linear sequence. It happened to fall into place because of the events of the day, but on an ordinary day when not much happens, coming up with this type of arc is usually much more challenging. I’ll take them when they come, and use Drew’s prompts when they don’t. In any case, I’m enjoying this process.

  1. The addition of commentary is a nice touch. May not be necessary if you are just doing these for yourself, but as I age, I find I don't remember things as easily as I once did. So when you look at these a few years or more from now, you won't have to furrow your brow and try to remember what the heck these drawings were all about. :-) And I do like these a lot.

    1. Hmmm... that's a good point! Not much time has to pass before details become foggy! ;-)

  2. Just enough information. I don't know if I would have the energy to do these at the end of the day. Curious about what was in the "joy" folder.

    1. If I weren't usually so busy in the morning, I would try this earlier and see how it might change my drawings (or penmanship, for sure).

  3. These are so sweet/bittersweet. The emotions are coming out and that helps me relate. Hugs. The balance of words and pictures are pretty good in that it communicates just enough for total strangers to understand what is happening, or guess what is happening. It's ok to leave some parts ambiguous. I like how you are using the contrast in values or colour to bring out the important parts in each panel:)

    1. Thanks so much for the feedback, Drew! I will keep working on that balance because I don't want them to be totally cryptic, but I also don't want a lot of explanation, which I think can seem like I'm just describing what I already sketched.
