103 People – a Sprint to the End

3/5/23 These were warm-up sketches I made at Cloud City
Coffee the day before the challenge began, so I didn't
count them in my total.

With a sprint to the finish line on Day 5, I put away another year of One Week 100 People! In prior years (I’ve participated annually since the challenge’s inception in 2017), I’ve usually finished my hundred people with time to spare for several more. This year, however, I was also working on the week’s hefty homework assignments in Kathleen Moore’s class, so the pressure was on. I’m often motivated by time pressure, though, when the activity is fun, so my limited time didn’t mar my pleasure. I especially enjoyed making a substantial chunk of sketches with USk Seattle on Tuesday. Shown here are all the rest from the week.

As I have in the past, I kept my sketches small – nothing more than quick gestures taking a few seconds each. Although they are little more than stick figures, I tried my best to capture each as a unique individual and not a generic symbol. One drawback, though, is that almost everyone here wears the same winter uniform: Hooded coats!

On Thursday afternoon, I got together for coffee with Ching (go check out her fantastic people sketches on Instagram) and Natalie at Magnuson Café and Brewery. I wasn’t able to make as many sketches there, but I had time to put in more detail and shading, which was also satisfying.

3/9 and 3/10/23

I found it interesting that the first few of each day felt a bit stiff before I got into the flow, but it took less and less time to warm up as the week went on. This five-day challenge is such a great testament to the value of ongoing, regular practice.

Many thanks to Marc Holmes and Liz Steel for initiating the challenge and keeping it going every year. It’s still one of my favorite sketching challenges, and I was especially pleased to do all of my one hundred people from life.

3/10/23 Done -- 103 total!
