Extreme Heat Advisory

7/28/22 Maple Leaf neighborhood

After the previous night’s heat, the early-morning air felt like a stream of cool water. As soon as I woke up, I threw all the windows and doors wide open. Then I headed out before 8 a.m. to get ahead of another day with an “extreme heat advisory” warning.

An informative thumbnail

It was still a comfortable 68 degrees when I spotted the lovely light on these traffic circle trees. I wanted to work out how I’d incorporate the house behind them, so I made a quick thumbnail. Often I end up making compositions tighter than my original rectangle, but the thumbnail revealed that the foreground needed something: the traffic circle’s shadow.

My usual habit is to keep the lighted side of objects white, but I felt like coloring the tree trunks warm yellow. It must have been a reflection of my over-heated frame of mind: At the end of my walk about an hour later, the temperature had climbed to 74. Still comfortable, but a sign that another scorcher was ahead.

  1. Tina, both your thumbnail and finished sketch are fantastic!!! I love the way you did the light and shadow on the trees and foliage, and that traffic circle shadow really ties things together! The textures on the sign shadows are so nice too. Good luck with that weather!

  2. The addition of the yellow increases the feeling of heat in your sketch. Nicely done! Glad to hear the heatwave finally broke. We are in the midst of some hot weather here. I try to get out to sketch early and then spend the rest of the day at the pool.
