Fisherman’s Terminal

After a lovely al fresco lunch (the Copper River salmon is in!) with a friend at Chinook’s looking out over Salmon Bay, I walked along Fisherman’s Terminal to find a sketch. Hundreds of fishing vessels (along with some pleasure craft) are moored there. Walking back and forth several times, I considered making a portrait of a single ship, and I also considered a wide view showing rows and rows of masts. As impressive as it all was, nothing quite grabbed me.

Ultimately the sight that captured my eye and attention was the Fisherman’s Memorial, dedicated to the 675 local people who have lost their lives while commercial fishing since the turn of the 20^th century. Several bouquets of flowers had been left there, and the names of individuals are engraved on nearby plaques. The memorial plaque reads:

“Seattle Fisherman’s Memorial – Dedicated on Oct. 8, 1988, as a tribute to the men, women, their families, and the members of the fishing community who have suffered loss of life at sea.”
