Gaining Perspective

7/9/12, Copic Multiliner SP pen, watercolor
In the urban landscape, buildings are almost unavoidable, yet I find myself running from them (sometimes literally) when I have a sketchbook in hand. While some sketchers shy away from drawing people, I have the same reaction toward architectural structures – all those parallel lines that don’t look parallel and all that perspective stuff that if you don’t get right, the whole building looks wrong, even when your brain can’t figure out why.

So I’ve checked out a few library books on architectural sketching and have challenged myself to stop running from buildings. Here’s our neighbor’s house across the street, sketched from our upstairs bedroom window. Let’s just call this a baseline against which I’ll evaluate my progress.

  1. Perspective is the thing by which I'm most challenged in this venture back to drawing and painting! I checked out some books just on perspective and found them far more complicated than the last time I studied art (40 years ago!).

  2. I missed a lot of your latest posts. Love the sketches in Boston. I see you like sketching at Farmers Markets too. Our market doesn't have music! I'm jealous. Good for you that you are tackling perspective. I sometimes look at a building and just can't make heads or tails out of the angles. lol Great job on the latest posts.

  3. Thanks for your comments, Kate and Joan! If either of you have recommendations for books on perspective, I'm all ears. The ones I've found have been a mixed bag.
